Who I am

I cover, and care about, sustainability and green technology — my contribution to the cause is to educate myself and tell others.

I worked in daily journalism for 28 years, the last 14 of them as an editor at the Boston Globe before accepting a buyout in April 2007. I worked in most subject areas, and wrote even more widely working as a freelancer within the organization.

Most of my writing today appears in either of two blogs I write — one focused on sustainability and one for everything else — or in a growing number of periodicals willing to publish my work.

But my largest active writing project is a memoir of recovery from extreme obesity, by means that are not part of the nation's "solutions" for this growing problem: therapy, eating-disorder rehab, addiction support groups, and spiritual development. "Fat Boy, Thin Man" is not only entertaining, but an important addition to the discussions of obesity in America. If nothing else is clear, what we regard as solutions are not solving the problem; meanwhile, I've been living in a normal-sized body for almost 20 years, after reaching a bottom of 365 pounds.

This isn't a diet book, and I'm definitely not a diet guru; I didn't create any of the methods that led to my turnaround. Other people shared their experiences with me, and now I'm trying to do the same, if in a slightly broader way. The book goes beyond memoir in a couple of important ways, to describe how others could benefit from what I did, and how public policy could make it so much easier to overcome obesity.

I don't have a publisher yet, but you can read excerpts on the homepage.

In my home life, meanwhile, I’m a prospective father, awaiting a domestic adoption for which my wife Georgina and I were certified in December 2006. The wait is definitely longer than we expected, but I try to remain aware that everything happens in God’s time, and that the right child will arrive at the perfect time.

Changes 'round here

This page now features all my professional writing. I've split my blog in two. The one here has a new name, "Sustainably," and is exclusively about green living and technology. Pragerblog continues, without the green content, at fisherblue.com/blog.

The left column discusses my memoir on obesity, "Fat Boy, Thin Man." Note the excerpts, please.

The right column features my work in print periodicals, current and past.
